Breaking barriers and building connections

Breaking barriers, building connections and promoting inclusion was achieved in many ways over the past year.

Building mentorships, supporting success

Student Life strove to break down barriers for those affected by systemic exclusion and discrimination, and the Black Alumni Mentorship Program exemplified this by giving students the opportunity to build meaningful mentorship relationships while supporting them on their academic, personal and career paths.

Promoting inclusion and cultural preservation

TMU’s gift of a buffalo skull promoted inclusion and the breakdown of barriers by recognizing the work being done to ensure students have access to cultural teaching and support in their academic journeys.

The Buffalo skull, with its deep cultural significance, symbolizes the enduring spirit of First Nations House and its unwavering commitment to education and cultural preservation.

Celebrating 30 years

The celebrations of First Nations House’s 30th anniversary also fostered belonging by creating opportunities for community and connection.

Fostering belonging through an intercultural lens

Student Life also fostered belonging through an intercultural lens with the Intercultural Framework and My Career Story, which recognized and celebrated U of T’s diverse global community.

Intercultural Framework
  • Environmental scan (32 interviews, 150 student survey responses)
  • IDI qualified administrators trained (11 staff)
  • 3 professional development sessions (211 staff, faculty, post-doc participants)
  • 1 Intercultural Framework
  • 3 accompanying online modules
  • 76 staff/faculty consulted for feedback during “roadshow”
