Finding a Therapist

Therapy can be a transformative experience, providing space to work through mental health challenges and move towards positive change. Health & Wellness provides easy access to short-term counselling, but for students looking for longer-term support, knowing where or how to find therapists in the community can be challenging.

In 2023-2024, Health & Wellness helped make students’ search for therapists easier with a new workshop called “Finding a Therapist.” Developed by wellness navigation advisors, Maki Mori and Laura Krahn, the session was offered multiple times each semester and continues to run monthly.

The workshop discusses what therapy is, what to look for in a therapist, options for marginalized students, and includes an experiential exercise to explore ways to take care of mental health both in and outside of therapy. More than an information session, students search for and reach out to therapists during the workshop.

This consistently popular offering helped 130 students search for a therapist with over 75% of participants feeling more ready to connect with a therapist after attending the workshop.

One participant shared the progress they made while attending Finding a Therapist:

“Originally, I was struggling since there were so many options, but by the end I had sent three emails to different therapists.”
