Indigenous Education Week
Indigenous Fashion and Regalia
Indigenous Education Week, coordinated by Indigenous Student Services continued to be a celebration of cultural heritage and educational enrichment. The 2023 theme, “Indigenous Fashion and Regalia,” brought together a vibrant array of events that highlighted the rich traditions and contemporary expressions of Indigenous identity.
In alignment with the Student Life’s commitment to supporting a holistic student experience that values students’ lived experiences and draws on Indigenous approaches to learning and ways of knowing, Indigenous Education Week featured 13 diverse events from Inuit Fashion Guest Speak with Naulaq to a Ribbon Skirt Workshop with Ocean Kiana. These included workshops, lectures and community gatherings, each designed to educate and engage the University community in meaningful ways.
The week culminated in a spectacular sold out Indigenous Fashion Show, showcasing the creativity and craftsmanship of Indigenous designers with over 300 attendees. This event not only celebrated the beauty and significance of traditional regalia but also provided a platform for contemporary Indigenous fashion, bridging the past and present.
Guest speakers, knowledge keepers and educators shared their insights and stories, enriching the University’s understanding of Indigenous cultures. Through these activities, Indigenous Education Week has significantly contributed to creating a more inclusive campus, bringing the university closer to its strategic goals.
