Staff Commitments & Engagement

One of Student Life’s goals is to advance its work and practice to support a student-centric campus community. Take a look at how we advanced this goal in 2024–2025.

Learning from Indigenous communities through global engagement

The U of T Indigenous student trip to New Zealand was a unique, land-based experiential learning opportunity for students and staff. Activities in this nation-to-nation exchange included visiting Indigenous Māori tribes, learning about their relationships with land, business, co-governance, urban tribal relationships, arts and more.

Supporting strategic initiatives through staff development

Student Life showed its commitment to advancing institutional initiatives, priorities, policies and practices through Experiential Learning and Community-Engaged Learning staff modules and the adoption of a helpful new time-management system.

Supporting excellence in advising and assessment

The Academic Advising Training program offered a space for staff members to expand their advising knowledge and skillset, while the ASD Assessor’s Assessment Documentation Checklist outlined the essential components to be included in psycho-educational assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), providing expertise, knowledge, resources and leadership.

advisors participated in one or more levels of the Academic Advising Training Program.
The number is expected to increase by another 100 in the 2025-2026 academic year.

Expanding confidence through mental health training

Expanded mental health trainings gave students, staff members and faculty members more ways to build their confidence in supporting people with mental health challenges. A new Health & Wellness web page was also created to outline the range of training available.

Assessing staff EDIA needs

Investing in staff professional development and well-being, a staff EDIA needs/barrier assessment was created to collect insight. Work Study students also completed a report on the project assessing EDIA engagement in Student Life.

Developing intercultural teaching skills

Staff members at the Centre for Learning Strategy Support were encouraged to regularly engage in internal professional development opportunities, while the Centre for International Experience partnered with the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation and the Teaching Assistants’ Training Program to develop intercultural and global fluencies workshops for teaching assistants and course instructors.
